Ngorongoro Crater

Location: Tanzania

One of the most magical places on Earth, the Ngorongoro crater is like something from a fictional novel. Found amongst the northern highlands of Tanzania, this gigantic caldera formed from a collapsed volcano which erupted some 2.5 million years ago.

19 km in diameter as you slowly descend towards the crater floor (some 2000ft below), you can expect to experience some of the best wildlife sightings in Africa. Year-round, the Crater is home to Lion, Leopard, Spotted Hyaena, Cheetah, Elephant, Buffalo and even the rare Black Rhino (the open plains of the crater make this one of the best places to spot this often secretive species).

When to go:

Due to the massive concentrations game which reside here year round; you are almost guaranteed a wonderful show at any time of year. The only problem with Ngorongoro is how busy the park can become, which has an adverse effect on the quality of game viewing on offer. July and August are the busiest months, as is Christmas and much of February.

November, April and May (the low season) are the times to go for those looking to gain very good rates on accommodation, although at this time of year there can be quite heavy thunderstorms.
