Known for its diverse landscapes of savannah, mighty baobab trees, rocky hills and the Great Ruaha River itself; Ruaha is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including some of the largest populations of Elephant, Wild Dog and Lion left anywhere in Africa.

Despite one of the largest National Parks in Africa, Ruaha is a little known and offers a unique wilderness experience - well off the beaten track - unlike further north in the country. This is a place is for the adventurous soul, who wants the freedom of being alone with a vast, untouched area of natural beauty.

Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere is a vast area of land (almost the size of Ireland!) which makes up Africa’s largest wildlife refuge. The vast majority of activities happen in north of the park – around the mighty Rufiji River – East Africa’s largest waterway.

Lions are particularly prevalent in the Park, which is also home to the largest population of African Wild Dogs in the world – something which is a major attraction to the area. Aside from these, Nyerere is also home to Leopard, Cheetah, Hippo, Buffalo, Giraffe and Elephant. Rhino are present but a very rarely seen.

One of the most magical places on Earth, the Ngorongoro crater is like something from a fictional novel. Found amongst the northern highlands of Tanzania, this gigantic caldera formed from a collapsed volcano which erupted some 2.5 million years ago.

19 km in diameter as you slowly descend towards the crater floor (some 2000ft below), you can expect to experience some of the best wildlife sightings in Africa. Year-round, the Crater is home to Lion, Leopard, Spotted Hyaena, Cheetah, Elephant, Buffalo and even the rare Black Rhino (the open plains of the crater make this one of the best places to spot this often secretive species).

Somewhere the clearly requires no introduction. This, most famous of National Parks, lies to the north of the country and is most certainly a contender for offering the best wildlife watching anywhere in the world. The Serengeti plays host to the ‘Great Migration’ involving the movement of some 2 million Blue Wildebeest, half a million Thompson’s Gazelles and 250,000 Zebra.

From the classic open, grassy plains in the south to the wooded grasslands and granite outcrops of the north, the Serengeti has a unique range of habitats which offer spectacular year-round game viewing – even when the migration has moved elsewhere in the park. The Serengeti is undoubtedly the best place in the world to see both Lion and Cheetah and is also home to other big game including Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo and Giraffe.
